1st Padstow Obby Oss - Celebrations begin in Padstow in the early morning on May Day with the stable doors opening to let the Oss appear onto the narrow streets. Firstly around the harbour crowded with thousands of onlookers, then up the narrow lanes goes the procession of the Obby Oss Clan even into gardens and houses. Festivities go on all day and into the evening. The Padstow Obby Oss is one of the oldest surviving festivals in Cornwall, and is believed to be an ancient fertility rite marking the coming of summer. The 1st of May sees Padstow decorated with the first greenery of the year, including bluebells, cowslips, forget-me-nots, hazel catkins and sycamore twigs. The procession sings the May Song and is dressed in white with red or blue sashes. Tel: 01841 533449 |

The Wadebridge Festival of Music & Speech are holding a concert in Wadebridge Town Hall ‘showcase’ some of the talent that has taken part in the festival over the years. Commencing at 7.30pm, will be compared by Sue Flitter and will present a programme that includes novice and experienced performers. Whether your preference is brass bands, woodwind, piano or vocals there will be something for everyone to enjoy and, as the festival also supports the spoken word, there will also be performances of poetry and prose. Cornwall has a wealth of talented musicians and singers of all ages and North Cornwall seems to have more than its fair share of award and trophy winning performers. Some of the past festival competitors have gone on to professional careers in music and the festival committee is delighted that Wadebridge educated Rebecca Moon, now enjoying a freelance career as a professional soloist in London, will be making an all too rare appearance in her home town. A contemporary of Rebecca’s at Wadebridge School, Leo Tarring, is also pursuing a career as a vocal/pianist of modern and popular music and it is hoped that, work permitting, Leo will also be supporting this festival concert. The festival is delighted to support and welcome the fresh young talent of the future at the same time as recognising and saluting the talent that has gone before. This is your opportunity to experience music-making at its finest, hearing professional musicians of the future and reacquainting yourself with old friends and festival familiar faces.
